Ajuy

Ajuy is a small coastal settlement on the western shore of Fuerteventura, in a region where dark volcanic sand and rugged cliffs replace the pale beaches more typical of the island’s east coast. It remains a modest fishing hamlet, its low houses gathered close to a sheltered cove, with the Atlantic pressing against a shoreline shaped by centuries of erosion.

The area’s principal draw is the Ajuy Caves, hollowed into the cliffs south of the village and reached along a coastal path that traces the base of the rock face. These caves have formed through the relentless action of sea and wind on the ancient stone, and walking to them offers a close view of the layered cliffs and the wild, open sea beyond.

Beyond the caves, Ajuy’s appeal lies in its quiet, unpolished character: a working village where boats are still pulled onto the sand and the surrounding landscape feels remote and elemental. It suits visitors drawn to coastal walking and natural scenery rather than resort amenities.
