South Tenerife
South Tenerife covers the drier, sun-baked stretch of the island, shaped by the rain shadow cast by Mount Teide and the central massifs. This lack of cloud cover has long made the area the island’s main draw for visitors seeking reliable sunshine, and it is home to the resort coastline and Tenerife’s southern airport, which links the region to the rest of the world.
The landscape here is markedly different from the lush, green north, with volcanic, semi-desert terrain giving way to black-sand and golden beaches along the coast. Away from the built-up resort strips, the interior retains a rugged, arid character typical of southern Tenerife’s volcanic geology.
As a broader region rather than a single town, South Tenerife encompasses a mix of coastal development and quieter inland villages, offering a useful base for exploring both the beaches and the more remote, sun-scorched corners of the island.
