Frontera is El Hierro’s main western village, set in the El Golfo valley beneath steep volcanic cliffs and open Atlantic views. Its mix of traditional houses, farmland and viewpoints makes it a central hub for exploring the island’s rugged north‑west.
Frontera lies in the centre of the El Golfo valley, a vast volcanic amphitheatre created by ancient landslides that shaped El Hierro’s dramatic north‑western coastline. The village sits between steep cliffs rising toward the island’s highlands and the open Atlantic stretching out from the lava‑formed shoreline.
The settlement is a mix of traditional houses, small farms and modern residential pockets, reflecting its role as the main community in the valley. Whitewashed homes and volcanic stone walls follow the contours of the terrain, while palm groves and cultivated plots add patches of green to the otherwise rugged landscape.
Frontera’s position makes it a natural base for exploring the region. To the north lies the coastline with landmarks such as Punta Grande Hotel and the natural pools of Charco Azul. Above the village, viewpoints like Mirador de La Peña and the forested routes toward La Llanía reveal the scale of the volcanic cliffs that frame the valley.
The climate in Frontera is shaped by its western exposure: warm, bright conditions along the lower slopes and cooler, cloud‑catching weather higher up. This variation supports both agriculture and the lush vegetation found in the upper valley.
