La Frontera
La Frontera occupies the inland sweep of the Golfo valley on El Hierro, a broad, fertile basin cupped beneath the island’s great crescent-shaped escarpment. The steep walls that rise behind the settlement mark the edge of an ancient landslide, and the terraced slopes below them have long been given over to vineyards and small-scale farming, taking advantage of the sheltered, volcanic ground.
As an inland area, La Frontera is defined more by this dramatic backdrop than by any single monument: scattered hamlets, winding roads and patchwork fields make up much of the landscape, with the cliffs forming a constant, looming presence to the east. It offers a quieter, more agricultural counterpoint to the island’s coastal towns.
No specific landmarks are recorded here yet, but the area’s character comes through clearly in its setting â a farming district tucked into one of El Hierro’s most striking geological features.
