Set inland on a green plateau above Santa Cruz, La Laguna's old town is Tenerife's original capital and a university city built on a grid of streets later echoed across colonial Spanish America. Balconied houses, quiet squares and church towers make up a townscape shaped by highland cloud and centuries of civic life.
La Laguna sits on a broad plateau in the north of Tenerife, well above the coast and often wrapped in the low cloud that trade winds push against the island’s northern slopes. The air here is noticeably cooler and damper than in Santa Cruz or the southern resorts, and the surrounding valley, historically known as Aguere, once held a lake that gave the town its name before it was drained for agriculture.
The old town grew as one of the earliest Spanish settlements on the island, laid out with an orderly grid of streets rather than the huddled, defensive lanes typical of older Iberian towns. That planned layout, unusual for its time, went on to inform the design of colonial towns across the Americas, making La Laguna’s streets a reference point in the wider history of Spanish urban planning.
Walking through the centre today means passing between rows of Canarian houses with dark wooden balconies, internal patios glimpsed through open doorways, and the towers of parish churches marking the skyline. Squares open out at intervals, offering places to pause between the university buildings, former civic palaces and shopfronts that line the main streets.
As the historic seat of island government before that role passed to Santa Cruz, La Laguna kept its administrative and religious buildings largely intact, and later grew into a university city, giving the old town a steady, everyday rhythm of students and residents rather than a purely museum-like feel. Its inland, elevated setting also means a different pace of light and weather from the coast, with clear highland mornings often giving way to drifting cloud by afternoon.
