Set inland on a green plateau above Santa Cruz, La Laguna's old town is Tenerife's original capital and a university city built on a grid of streets later echoed across colonial Spanish America. Balconied houses, quiet squares and church towers make up a townscape shaped by highland cloud and centuries of civic life.

La Laguna sits on a broad plateau in northern Tenerife, well above the coast and often wrapped in the low cloud that trade winds push against the island’s upland slopes. The air here is cooler and softer than in Santa Cruz or the southern resorts, and the valley historically known as Aguere — once home to a shallow lake — gives the town a sense of openness rare in older Canarian settlements.

The old town grew as one of the earliest Spanish foundations on the island, laid out with an orderly grid of streets rather than the defensive, winding lanes typical of Iberian towns of the same era. That planned layout became a reference point for colonial cities across Spanish America, making La Laguna’s urban fabric part of a much wider architectural story.

Walking through the centre means passing rows of Canarian houses with dark wooden balconies, glimpses of internal patios through open doorways, and parish church towers rising above the rooftops. Squares open out at intervals, offering places to pause between university buildings, former civic palaces and shopfronts that line the main streets. The rhythm is steady and lived‑in — students, residents and visitors sharing the same narrow pavements.

As Tenerife’s historic seat of government before that role passed to Santa Cruz, La Laguna kept much of its administrative and religious architecture intact. Its inland, elevated setting also shapes the experience: clear highland mornings often give way to drifting cloud by afternoon, softening the light on stone facades and wooden balconies.

La Laguna Old Town remains one of the island’s most atmospheric places — a UNESCO‑listed grid of colonial streets where climate, history and everyday life meet on a plateau above the sea.
