Valverde

Valverde is the capital of El Hierro and, unusually for a Canarian capital, sits inland rather than on the coast, perched on the island’s north side above the surrounding valleys. Its position was chosen in part for shelter from the winds and pirate raids that once troubled lower-lying settlements, and the town still has the feel of a modest highland administrative centre rather than a resort or port.

As the seat of the island’s institutions, Valverde functions as the practical hub of El Hierro, where daily life, government and services are concentrated. The surrounding North region offers a quieter, greener backdrop, with the town itself remaining low-key and unpretentious compared to the more visited coastal spots elsewhere on the island.
