Arucas

Arucas sits among the fertile lowlands of northern Gran Canaria, an inland town whose skyline is dominated by the dark volcanic stone spires of Arucas Cathedral. Though not a true cathedral in ecclesiastical terms, its elaborate neo-Gothic towers rise above the surrounding streets, giving the town a striking, almost European silhouette that is unusual for the island and has long made it a recognisable landmark of the north.

On the edge of town, Mount Arucas offers a natural counterpoint to the built-up centre, its slopes rising steeply and affording wide views across the surrounding countryside towards the coast. The mountain has traditionally served as a vantage point over the town and the patchwork of land below, linking Arucas to the wider agricultural landscape that has shaped this part of the island.
