La Geria

La Geria lies in the interior of Lanzarote, within the wine-producing heartland of the island. The area is best known for its distinctive agricultural landscape, in which vines are grown in individual hollows scooped from the volcanic ash, each one sheltered by a low crescent-shaped wall built from dark, porous stone. This method of cultivation, adapted to the island’s dry climate and volcanic soils, gives La Geria a striking, almost lunar appearance that sets it apart from more conventional vineyard regions.

The landscape here is the product of centuries of volcanic activity that reshaped the surrounding terrain, leaving a thick layer of ash, or picón, that farmers learned to work with rather than against. Rows of these stone-walled hollows stretch across the undulating ground, following the natural contours of the land rather than a rigid grid, which adds to the area’s distinctive visual rhythm.

La Geria is generally visited while travelling between other parts of the island, offering a quieter, more agricultural counterpoint to Lanzarote’s coastal resorts. It remains a working landscape rather than a formal attraction, valued for the way it demonstrates a practical, long-standing response to a demanding volcanic environment.
