Artenara

Artenara sits higher than any other village on Gran Canaria, perched along the island’s rugged interior where the terrain falls away into deep ravines. Its most distinctive feature is the tradition of cave dwelling, still visible in the Artenara Caves, where homes and even a chapel have been hollowed directly into the volcanic rock. This troglodyte character gives the settlement a look quite unlike the coastal towns, blending into the pale stone of the hillsides.

Just beyond the village lies Tamadaba Natural Park, a sweep of pine forest and dramatic cliffs that ranks among the island’s most significant protected areas. The park’s high vantage points offer sweeping views across the interior towards the coast, and its trails draw walkers keen to experience Gran Canaria’s mountainous core away from the crowds.

Together, the caves and the surrounding natural park make Artenara a place defined by altitude, rock, and pine woodland, a quieter counterpoint to the island’s beaches and resorts.
