Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico sits on the southern coast of Gran Canaria, one of the island’s purpose-built resort towns tucked into a ravine that runs down to the sea. Its terraced apartment blocks and hotels climb the slopes on either side of the valley, taking advantage of the sheltered position and the consistently sunny, dry climate typical of this part of the island.

At the heart of the resort lies Puerto Rico Beach, a sheltered stretch of sand within the small bay that forms the town’s focal point. Protected from the wind by the surrounding cliffs, the calm waters here have made the beach a popular base for swimming and watersports, and the promenade behind it is lined with the cafés, shops and leisure facilities typical of the area’s holiday infrastructure.

As a modern development rather than a historic settlement, Puerto Rico is geared almost entirely towards tourism, offering an easy, low-key base from which to enjoy the south of Gran Canaria’s coastline and mild year-round weather.
