Maspalomas
Maspalomas sits on the southern coast of Gran Canaria, where the island’s holiday development meets a stretch of protected natural landscape. The area is best known for the Maspalomas Dunes, a shifting expanse of golden sand that separates the resort area from the shoreline and forms one of the most distinctive natural features on the island. Alongside the dunes, the Maspalomas Lagoon offers a quieter, sheltered pocket of water and reed-lined shore, a contrast to the open beach nearby.
The beach itself, Maspalomas, runs along the coast as a wide arc of sand backed by the dune system, giving the area its identity as both a natural reserve and a long-established holiday destination. At its western end stands the Maspalomas Lighthouse, a long-standing landmark that has served as a navigational point along this coastline and remains a fixed reference for orienting the area’s layout, from dunes to seafront.
Together these features give Maspalomas a layered character: dunes and lagoon forming a protected natural area, the beach providing the coastal edge, and the lighthouse marking the point where they all converge.
