A stretch of dark volcanic coastline on Anaga's northern flank, where a lone sea stack stands offshore below cliffs draped in laurel forest. Reached along winding roads from Taganana, it is one of the peninsula's most remote and elemental shorelines, shaped by Atlantic swell and trade-wind mist.
The coast takes its name from the roque itself, a dark basalt stack rising from the water just off the shoreline, visible from the small hamlet that shares its name. This is Anaga at its most exposed: a north-facing edge of Tenerife where the Atlantic meets sheer volcanic cliffs, and where the land seems to end abruptly rather than taper into a beach.
Anaga’s geology is old by island standards, its rock heavily eroded into ridges, gullies and near-vertical barrancos that drop straight to the sea. Along this stretch, the terrain shows that history plainly: layered lava flows, scree slopes and outcrops worn smooth by wind and salt spray. Above the coast, the moisture carried in on the trade winds keeps the upper slopes green with laurisilva and fayal-brezal scrub, a striking contrast to the bare, sun-scoured rock at sea level.
Access is part of the character of the place. Roads into this part of Anaga twist through the hamlets scattered around Taganana, dropping steeply toward the water, while several of the peninsula’s walking routes pass close to or above the coast, linking it to neighbouring valleys and ridgelines. Fishing has long been a quiet presence here, tied to the small settlements dotted along this shore rather than to any larger town.
Conditions change quickly. Cloud can roll in off the ridge above within minutes, and the sea along this coast is rarely calm, with swell breaking hard against the rock. It rewards those who come for the landscape itself — the roque silhouetted against the water, the cliffs behind it, and the sense of standing at one of Tenerife’s most unshaped edges.
