A lava tube carved by an ancient eruption of Pico Viejo, reached through the terraced hillsides above Icod de los Vinos on Tenerife's north coast. Beneath fields of vines and laurel woodland, the volcano's molten rock left behind a dark, cool passage through solid basalt.
The hills above Icod de los Vinos rise steadily from the coast towards the Teide massif, and it was an eruption from Pico Viejo, one of Teide’s satellite volcanoes, that shaped the ground here long before the town’s vineyards and banana terraces were laid out. As molten lava flowed downhill towards the sea, its outer surface cooled and hardened while the interior kept moving, eventually draining away and leaving a hollow conduit of solid rock behind.


That conduit is the lava tube known as Cueva del Viento. Unlike the sun-bleached coastline below, the tube sits within the cooler, greener middle altitudes of the island’s north, where cloud cover and moisture linger longer and the vegetation shifts from cultivated terraces towards native laurisilva and pine. The rock itself tells the story of the eruption in layers, ridges and folds frozen mid-flow.
Access is strictly controlled, with visits led by guides who explain the volcanic processes at work and point out the features characteristic of lava tube formation elsewhere on the island’s flanks. Inside, temperatures stay markedly cooler than the surrounding countryside, and the darkness is complete once away from the entrance, a reminder of how much of Tenerife’s interior was built layer upon layer by eruptions from the Teide-Pico Viejo complex over thousands of years.
The wider Icod de los Vinos area, known for its wine production and its old town centre, sits on ground shaped by exactly this kind of volcanic activity, making the lava tube a direct, physical link between the landscape visitors see on the surface and the forces that built it.
