🧭 Overview

Masca Trail is Tenerife’s signature ravine descent, a steep route from Masca Village through volcanic walls, narrow passages and deep shadowed terrain before reaching the Atlantic at Playa de Masca. It remains one of the island’s most dramatic geological walks.

The Masca Trail begins in Masca Village, a small settlement perched on a narrow ridge within the Teno massif. From the outset, the terrain drops sharply, revealing the deep volcanic gorge that forms the backbone of the route. The descent follows the natural line of the ravine, moving between tall basalt walls shaped by erosion and ancient volcanic activity.

The upper section is defined by terraces, dry slopes and scattered vegetation typical of the massif’s southern face. As the trail enters the gorge proper, the landscape tightens: rock corridors, shaded passages and sudden openings where light falls between the high walls. The sound of water is often present, especially in cooler months when small streams run along the ravine floor.

Further down, the gorge becomes more enclosed. Large boulders, narrow ledges and uneven volcanic ground mark the route, giving a clear sense of the geological forces that carved the valley. The atmosphere shifts with altitude — bright at the top, cooler and more humid in the lower sections where the walls rise steeply on both sides.

The trail ends at Playa de Masca, a small volcanic‑sand beach framed by cliffs. The transition from enclosed ravine to open Atlantic is one of the walk’s defining moments, with the horizon opening suddenly after hours spent within the gorge.

Masca Trail remains one of Tenerife’s most expressive geological routes: a descent through volcanic architecture, shaped by erosion, altitude and the meeting point between mountain and ocean.
