Hermigua
Hermigua occupies a long, deep valley on the northern coast of La Gomera, where steep, terraced slopes descend towards the sea. It is often described as one of the greenest and most fertile parts of the island, with banana plantations, vegetable plots and orchards filling the valley floor and climbing the surrounding hillsides in stepped terraces.
The area’s traditional character owes much to this agricultural landscape, shaped over generations to make the most of the water flowing down from the island’s central highlands. Scattered hamlets and older stone-and-tile buildings sit among the cultivated terraces, giving Hermigua a settled, rural feel that contrasts with the more rugged volcanic terrain found elsewhere on La Gomera.
As part of the island’s northern region, Hermigua also serves as a natural point from which to appreciate the transition between coast and mountain, with the valley opening out to the Atlantic while its upper reaches lead towards the forested slopes of the interior.
