Arrecife
Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote, a working port town that grew up around a rocky shoreline of reefs, which gives the settlement its name. At its heart lies Arrecife Marina, a hub of moored boats and waterside promenades that reflects the town’s long relationship with the sea and remains a focal point for visitors and locals alike.
The town’s maritime past is further reflected in the Castillo de San Gabriel, a small fortress reached by a causeway over the water, built to guard the capital from the raids that once threatened the island’s coastal settlements. Today it stands as one of the few historic monuments within Arrecife itself, a reminder of the town’s role as a defensive outpost before it grew into the island’s administrative and commercial centre.
Beyond these two landmarks, Arrecife functions primarily as a gateway and service town for Lanzarote, offering a more everyday, lived-in counterpoint to the island’s resort areas further along the coast.
