Cumbre Vieja

Cumbre Vieja is the volcanic ridge that runs along the southern spine of La Palma, a raw and relatively young landscape of dark cones, cinder fields and solidified lava flows. It forms the backbone of the island’s south, separating the eastern and western slopes and giving the area its stark, otherworldly character.

The ridge is best experienced on foot along the Ruta de los Volcanes, a long-distance hiking route that traces the crest of the massif past a succession of craters and volcanic vents. Walking here reveals the layered history of eruptions that have shaped this part of the island, with wide views stretching down towards the coast on both sides. Vegetation is sparse in places, giving way to expanses of pine and broom that have colonised older sections of the terrain.

As a natural rather than built-up area, Cumbre Vieja has little in the way of towns or amenities, and its appeal lies chiefly in its geology and the sense of exposed, elemental landscape. It remains a place defined by volcanic activity, both ancient and recent, and offers a striking contrast to the more cultivated valleys elsewhere on La Palma.
