La Orotava
La Orotava sits in the fertile valley that bears its name, on the northern slopes of Tenerife beneath the looming presence of Mount Teide. The town’s historic centre is known for its steep, cobbled streets and traditional Canarian architecture, with wooden balconies and stone façades reflecting a long history of settlement in this part of the island.
The surrounding valley has long been shaped by agriculture, its terraced slopes given over to vines, bananas and other crops that thrive in the mild, well-watered climate typical of the north. This combination of historic town and cultivated landscape gives La Orotava a character quite distinct from the resort coasts nearby, offering a quieter, more traditional face of Tenerife.
As part of the island’s North region, La Orotava benefits from cooler, greener surroundings than the south, with views that stretch from the valley floor up towards Teide’s summit and down towards the coast near Puerto de la Cruz.
