Famara
Famara sits on Lanzarote’s west coast, where the flat farmland of the interior gives way abruptly to the dark cliffs of the Famara massif. The village itself is a modest, low-rise cluster of streets, but its setting is dramatic, with the sheer rock face forming a backdrop to one of the island’s most striking stretches of coastline.
The main draw is Playa Famara, a long sweep of golden sand facing the Atlantic. Its exposed position makes it a popular spot for surfing and windsurfing, with waves and winds that regularly bring practitioners of both to the beach. The scale of the sand, combined with the looming cliffs behind it, gives the area a raw, open feel quite different from the more sheltered resort beaches found elsewhere on the island.
Beyond the beach, Famara remains a relatively quiet base, appealing to those drawn to nature and outdoor activity rather than nightlife or shopping. Its position on the west coast also makes it a natural point from which to appreciate the contrast between Lanzarote’s volcanic interior and its Atlantic shoreline.
