Vega de Río Palmas
Vega de Río Palmas is a small inland valley in Fuerteventura’s central highlands, known for its terraced terrain, dry vegetation and quiet settlement. Its sheltered position beneath the Betancuria massif gives it a distinct landscape compared to the surrounding volcanic ridges.
Vega de Río Palmas lies in a sheltered inland valley south of Betancuria, shaped by terraced slopes, dry vegetation and the volcanic ridges of the central highlands. The settlement is one of the few areas in the region where the terrain softens into a narrow valley, creating a contrast with the surrounding open ridges.
The landscape consists of cultivated terraces, scattered palm trees and dry ground adapted to the highland climate. The valley’s position beneath the Betancuria massif gives it a more protected atmosphere than the exposed slopes above.
The settlement includes traditional houses and narrow streets that reflect the inland architectural style. Nearby lies the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Peña, an important religious site connected to the island’s early history.

Vega de Río Palmas forms part of the inland route linking Betancuria, Morro Velosa and the western highlands. Its combination of terraced terrain, quiet atmosphere and highland setting makes it one of Fuerteventura’s most characteristic inland valleys.
