🧭 Overview

Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo is Spain’s largest botanical garden, dedicated to the conservation and study of Canary Islands flora. Located in Tafira, it integrates terraced paths, ravine viewpoints and endemic plant collections into the volcanic landscape.

Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo is the leading botanical garden of the Canary Islands and one of Spain’s most important centres for plant conservation. Founded in 1952 by botanist Eric R. Sventenius, the garden is dedicated to the study and protection of the archipelago’s unique flora.

The garden covers a vast area across the slopes of Barranco de Guiniguada, combining terraced paths, volcanic rock formations and natural ravine viewpoints. Visitors can explore collections of endemic species, rare island plants and themed zones that highlight the extraordinary biodiversity of Gran Canaria.

Its location within the volcanic landscape of Tafira and Monte Lentiscal creates a seamless blend between cultivated botanical areas and natural terrain. Many sections of the garden preserve native vegetation in situ, offering insight into the ecological richness of the island’s interior.

The garden also houses research facilities, seed banks and conservation programmes focused on endangered species. As a cultural and scientific landmark, it remains one of Gran Canaria’s most significant attractions for nature enthusiasts, researchers and visitors interested in island ecology.

📜 The story goes
Eric R. Sventenius (1910–1973), a Swedish botanist who settled on Gran Canaria, dedicated his life to cataloguing and protecting the Canary Islands’ unique flora. In 1952 he founded the Jardín Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo, designing it as a living sanctuary for endemic species integrated directly into the volcanic landscape. His work laid the foundation for modern botanical research across the archipelago.
