🧭 Overview

Cruz de Tejeda sits on a high volcanic saddle at the centre of Gran Canaria, where mountain roads converge above the vast Tejeda caldera. Marked by a historic stone cross and surrounded by pine forest, viewpoints and traditional inns, it remains one of the island’s classic inland stopping points.

Cruz de Tejeda occupies a natural saddle in Gran Canaria’s volcanic interior, a point where highland roads meet above the eroded basin of the Tejeda caldera. At around 1,500 metres, the air is cooler and clearer than on the coasts, and the landscape opens in all directions: pine forest, ravines and the silhouettes of Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga rising from the caldera walls.

The stone cross that gives the place its name has long served as a marker for travellers moving between interior villages. Around it, a small cluster of inns, cafés and craft stalls reflects Cruz de Tejeda’s role as a traditional mountain stopover — a place to pause between the steep roads linking Tejeda, Artenara, Valleseco and the central massif.

A short walk from the square brings the views fully into focus. The caldera spreads out below in a wide amphitheatre of volcanic ridges, terraced slopes and pine‑darkened valleys. On clear days, the horizon reaches all the way to Tenerife, with Mount Teide rising above the strait.

Because of its altitude, Cruz de Tejeda often sits above the cloud layer. Mist gathers in the ravines below while the saddle remains in sun, giving the area a shifting high‑mountain atmosphere. It is a natural gateway to surrounding trails — toward Roque Nublo, Bentayga, Artenara and the pine forests of Tamadaba — making it one of the most central and scenic points in Gran Canaria’s interior.
