Castillo San Felipe
Castillo San Felipe is a small 17th‑century coastal fort on Puerto de la Cruz’s north shore, built from dark volcanic stone to guard the town against seaborne attacks. Low walls, a compact courtyard and its position beside the Atlantic define this historic landmark.
Castillo San Felipe stands on the northern edge of Puerto de la Cruz, a low, dark‑stone fort built in the 1600s to defend the town from corsairs and privateers. Its position beside the Atlantic was strategic: the coastline here is exposed, with long swell rolling in from the north, and a fortified lookout was essential for the settlement that grew around the harbour.
The fort is compact, constructed from volcanic basalt typical of Tenerife’s northern flank. Thick walls enclose a small courtyard and interior rooms that once housed a garrison responsible for monitoring the shoreline. The structure’s simplicity reflects its purpose — a functional defensive post rather than an ornamental stronghold.
Today the fort sits within a pedestrian zone near Playa Jardín and the coastal promenade. Its low profile contrasts with the modern buildings behind it, and the sound of the Atlantic remains a constant presence, just as it would have been when the fort was active.
Castillo San Felipe is used for cultural exhibitions and events, with its interior spaces adapted for small shows and displays. Despite these modern uses, the building retains its historic character, shaped by basalt, salt air and centuries of exposure to the north‑coast climate.
