🧭 Overview

Lago Martiánez is a coastal water‑garden complex designed by César Manrique on Puerto de la Cruz’s oceanfront. Pools, volcanic stone, sculptural forms and open Atlantic views define this landmark, one of Tenerife’s most distinctive public spaces.

Lago Martiánez occupies a prime stretch of Puerto de la Cruz’s seafront, a landscape‑architecture project created by César Manrique to merge water, volcanic stone and sculptural forms into a single public space. The complex replaces the old shoreline pools with a design that reflects both the island’s geology and Manrique’s characteristic aesthetic.

The central feature is a large artificial lake fed by filtered seawater, surrounded by smaller pools set within terraces of white surfaces and dark basalt. Manrique’s sculptural elements appear throughout the complex — curved forms, volcanic rock arrangements and geometric lines that frame views toward the Atlantic.

The setting is shaped by the north‑coast climate. Trade‑wind moisture and bright coastal light give the complex a shifting atmosphere, with the ocean swell visible just beyond the perimeter walls. The contrast between the calm water of the lake and the open Atlantic is one of the site’s defining visual experiences.

Restaurants, walkways and sun terraces are integrated into the design rather than added onto it, maintaining the sense of a unified landscape. The central island within the lake holds additional facilities and serves as a focal point for the entire complex.

Lago Martiánez remains both a leisure space and a cultural landmark — a clear expression of Manrique’s ability to blend architecture, geology and oceanfront setting into a single coherent environment.
