Jardín Botánico
Jardín Botánico in Puerto de la Cruz is a historic botanical garden founded in the late 18th century, shaped by terraced paths, mature tropical species and the humid climate of Tenerife’s north coast. It remains one of the island’s most atmospheric scientific gardens.
Jardín Botánico sits on the upper slopes of Puerto de la Cruz, a garden established in the late 1700s to acclimatise tropical plants brought to the Canary Islands. Its terraced layout reflects both the steep terrain of the Orotava Valley and the scientific purpose behind its creation, with paths leading through collections arranged by origin and climate.

The garden’s atmosphere is shaped by the humid north‑coast weather. Moisture from the trade winds feeds palms, fig trees, philodendrons and towering specimens of tropical and subtropical species that have grown here for centuries. Many of the plants are mature enough to form shaded corridors, giving the garden a sense of depth and age uncommon in younger botanical collections.
Water features, ponds and shaded courtyards appear between terraces, each framed by volcanic stone typical of northern Tenerife. The garden’s historic greenhouse holds species that require controlled humidity, while open areas display large palms and flowering trees adapted to the island’s mild climate.

Jardín Botánico remains both a scientific institution and a quiet green refuge above Puerto de la Cruz. Its combination of historic purpose, mature vegetation and terraced design makes it one of Tenerife’s most distinctive cultural landscapes.
