🧭 Overview

Playa del Matorral is a wide pale‑sand beach on the southern edge of the Jandía peninsula, shaped by steady light, calm Atlantic conditions and the volcanic backdrop of Morro Jable. Its long open shoreline forms the natural frontage of the peninsula’s main southern town.

Playa del Matorral lies at the southern tip of the Jandía peninsula, where dry volcanic hills descend toward a calm Atlantic shoreline. The beach forms the natural frontage of Morro Jable, a settlement that grew from a small fishing community into the main resort centre of southern Fuerteventura.

The inland terrain is typical of Jandía’s southern flank: bare, weathered slopes with sparse vegetation adapted to strong sun and minimal rainfall. The beach’s sheltered position gives it calmer water than the more exposed northern and western coasts, contributing to its steady light and gentle gradient into the sea.

The shoreline consists of pale mineral sand and a wide open horizon, with the Atlantic stretching uninterrupted to the south. Despite the town’s growth, the beach retains a sense of scale and openness, with older streets sitting close to the water and newer development set further back.

Behind the beach, the Jandía massif rises in a rugged silhouette, its volcanic ridgelines forming a constant backdrop. The combination of calm water, pale sand and volcanic scenery makes Playa del Matorral one of the most characteristic beaches on Fuerteventura’s southern coast.
